Jan Steen

Jan Havickszoon Steen (1626-1679) was seen as the sharpest painter of life in Holland. He was born in Leiden and got his education at the University of Leiden. He first studied painting i Utrecht and after that in The Hague for the Dutch artist Jan van Goyen. He married his daughter in 1649. He lived in The Hague until 1654, when he moved to Delft and, according to tradition, adopted his father's occupation of brewer. The brewery closed down and in 1672 he opened a tavern in Leiden to make some extra money.

Many of his motifs are lively tavern scenes and children. He had a keen insight into the human behavior and his paintings have a great sence of timing and characterization that reminds of Frans Hals. He also paid much attention to his characters, their poses, body language, gestures and facial expressions. Sometimes he depicted himself and his family. Jan Steen was an productive painter and left about 800 paintings. He also painted landscapes, portraits and religious scenes, he was a Catholic. Among his best-known paintings are The Cat Family (1660), Young Woman at Her Toilette (1663), Wedding (1667), and The Surprise (1675).
